Motion event descriptions in Swedish, French, Thai and Telugu: a study in post-Talmian motion event typology

چکیده
Motion-event typology has moved into a “post-Talmian” terrain of approaches focusing on an open-ended number patterns across languages and constructions. Following proposal to distinguish between four typological clusters, we systematically compared the motion event descriptions in suggested exemplify these clusters: Swedish, French, Thai Telugu, with help elicitation-based study. 20 adult native speakers each language were asked describe 52 events, 38 which translocative. The stimuli varied respect parameters caused/uncaused, bounded/unbounded as well viewpoint from they filmed. analyzed following Holistic Spatial Semantics categories Path, Direction, Region, Landmark, Manner Cause, means expressing these. patterned differently significant ways. In terms Path expression, French lagged behind other languages, but it together Swedish. We demonstrate such criss-crossing patterns, showing that there is no way group thus implying at least distinct prototypes. Further, show different kinds situations, corresponding constructions, need be separately.

Motion Event Typology Meets Computational Modelling
Speaking involves a process of selecting words and constructions which correspond to the thoughts that one wishes to express. Different languages place different constraints on this selection process, corresponding to their typological characteristics. In this paper we show how Swedish, French and Thai preferentially express motion events differently and suggest a theoretical framework with gro...
متن کاملThe (Non)-linguistic Effects of Motion Event Typology
This study tests the hypothesis of linguistic relativity along two lines of research: a) how L2 learners of Chinese and English, respectively, syntactically package semantic components for caused motion (cause, manner, path) in an experimental situation in which they are asked to describe video clips showing caused motion events to an imagery addressee, and b) how monolingual native speakers of...
متن کاملMotion based Event Analysis
Motion is an important cue in videos that captures the dynamics of moving objects. It helps in effective analysis of various event related tasks such as human action recognition, anomaly detection, tracking, crowd behavior analysis, traffic monitoring, etc. Generally, accurate motion information is computed using various optical flow estimation techniques. On the other hand, coarse motion infor...
متن کاملEvent Recognition in Airborne Motion Imagery
A system is described that detects high-level events of interest in airborne motion imagery. The system starts by automatically extracting the tracks of movers from the imagery. It then uses tracks combined with context (cultural features, for example) to automatically detect low-level events. High-level events can be defined as patterns of lowlevel events. Exact or partial matches to these pat...
متن کاملSemantic Event Detection in Sports through Motion
In this paper we investigate the retrieval of semantic events that occur in broadcast sports footage. We do so by considering the spatio-temporal behaviour of an object in the footage as being the embodiment of a particular semantic event. Broadcast snooker footage is used as an example of the sports footage for the purpose of this research. The system parses the sports video using the geometry...
